He/him · Huntsville, AL

Grady Paul Gaston III, a seasoned software engineer and entrepreneur based in Huntsville, Alabama, has over three decades of experience in the technology sector. He founded a defense contracting firm in 1990 and a digital signature company in 1995, serving as an officer for over 16 years. His companies have provided solutions to complex challenges for government and commercial clients. Grady's interest in technology was sparked while pursuing his Bachelor's degree as a courier for the Computer Sciences Corporation. He took every opportunity to learn about programming from the company's computer operators, quickly becoming proficient enough to handle emergencies. This early experience led him to a role as a programmer and eventually to becoming the youngest software analyst at the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) while still in college. Grady earned a dual Bachelor of Science in Finance and Management from the University of Alabama, Huntsville, and a Master of Science in Software Engineering from the Southeastern Institute of Technology. He is also a Certified Data Processor. Among his significant achievements is developing a financial management system that set the standard for the Defense Department, uniquely passing the CFO Act of 1990 for 15 consecutive years without exceptions. In 1991, Grady pioneered the implementation of digital signatures and smart cards in collaboration with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the Government Accountability Office (GAO). His digital signature software has become a staple within the Department of Defense, boasting over four million users. Grady's visionary approach included creating custom applications such as Engineering Change Proposal systems and Configuration Management Systems before such products were commercially available. His legal and technical challenges involved securing endorsements from military brass and Congressional support, which is critical for projects funded by military and civil means. His efforts culminated in establishing digital signatures as legally binding, recognized by GAO, and supported by NIST standards. Security measures in Grady's solutions were robust, involving smart cards and a unique cryptographic setup to prevent fraud, drawing interest from other government bodies like the US State Department and the US Census Bureau. His work expanded the use of his digital signature solutions across various federal agencies. Grady is passionate about historical restoration and fitness outside of his professional life. He restored the Sim Corder/Harrison Mill, a family heritage site, and maintains a rigorous fitness regimen, achieving remarkable strength training milestones well into his senior years. Grady's dedication to his professional and personal pursuits showcases his diverse talents and commitment to making a significant impact.
